As Senior Vice President of Information Solutions at Deltek, Kevin Plexico is responsible for overseeing research, analysis and specification creation for customers in the Government Contracting and Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) industries. He provides thought leadership and expert opinion to industry executives and is a recognized expert on the public sector market.

Why did you choose JMU?

When I graduated high school, I was looking for colleges with good business programs, that were not too far or too close to home (I’m a Marylander), and that were not too big and not too small. I also visited some friends that went to JMU and fell in love with the culture (people that were friendly, smart, but easy going), the access to a nice, smallish town and the proximity to the great outdoor activities in the nearby national forest.

How did your degree from JMU lead you to where you are today?

I had no idea what I wanted to do going into college. I just knew it was something business related. When I took macroeconomics, my professor made the topic fascinating — monetary policy, interest rates, global econ, etc.. I was hooked. I hoped one day to work for the Federal Reserve or as an Economist. By the time I graduated, I really wanted to learn more about tech so I pursued my MBA in Info Systems. That combo proved perfect for a career in managing an online market intelligence offering.

What does working for the Federal Government community mean to you?

I grew up in a family of public servants. My grandfather was in the military in WW2. My uncle worked for the DoD. My father worked for NIH. My mother was a school teacher. While I didn’t necessarily aspire for a career in public service — I was drawn more to the business world — I have found it rewarding to feel I do a bit of both. In my career, I help bring industry and government together to improve our government’s ability to fulfill its broad and important missions.
